ISO 45001 Auditing

At 1st Quality Safety Consulting Inc., we provide ISO 45001 auditing services delivered by trained and experienced ISO 45001 lead auditors. Whether you’re pursuing initial certification, preparing for a surveillance audit, or approaching recertification, we ensure your Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) is thoroughly assessed for compliance, effectiveness, and continual improvement.

We are partnered with an accredited ISO 45001 certifying body, which allows us to not only assess your system but support the full certification process. Our audits are efficient, practical, and built to enhance real-world safety performance—not just satisfy an audit checklist.

Our ISO 45001 auditing services include:

  • Initial certification audits
  • Surveillance audits (Year 1 and Year 2)
  • Recertification audits (Year 3)
  • Internal audits and pre-certification readiness reviews
  • Gap assessments and corrective action evaluations
  • Multi-site and contractor auditing

The ISO 45001 audit process

The ISO 45001 audit process follows a structured series of stages designed to evaluate your system’s compliance and sustainability:

Initial OHSMS Audit

Stage 1 – Documentation Review

We review your existing documentation, including policies, procedures, hazard assessments, training records, and legal compliance tracking. This review confirms whether your system is ready for the formal on-site audit and identifies any significant gaps.

Stage 2 – On-Site Review

This is a comprehensive on-site audit of your OHSMS in action. Our auditors observe activities, interview personnel, and review records to assess how effectively your organization controls risk, complies with legal requirements, and promotes safety culture.

Surveillance Audits

After certification, we conduct annual surveillance audits to ensure your system continues to meet ISO 45001 requirements. These audits typically focus on high-risk areas, operational controls, and follow-ups from previous findings and take 1/3 of the time of the initial OHSMS audit.

Recertification Audit

Every three years, a recertification audit is required. This ensures your OHSMS remains effective, current, and aligned with changes in your organization or industry, and take 2/3 of the time of the initial OHSMS audit.

Corrective Actions and Follow-Up

If we identify nonconformities, you’ll receive a detailed report with clear guidance. You’ll be given time to correct the issues, and we will verify the implementation of those corrective actions before certification is issued or renewed.

What is a Safety Manual?

A safety manual is fundamental to a safety program by providing a collection of information, instructions, policies, and procedures intended to ensure the safe operations of companies that perform hazardous work. An effective safety manual empowers all levels of employees within a company to foster a safe work environment. It educates supervisors and workers, providing them with the tools to help complete their jobs safely.

Why Does My Business Need A Safety Program?

It’s an employer’s obligation to ensure employee safety. Because it’s not possible to supervise employees at all times, it’s important to develop standards and formalize them as policies and procedures to be executed by the safety program. An effective safety program helps prevent fatalities, injuries, illnesses, property or equipment damage, and harm to the environment.

Who Benefits From a Safety Program?

All levels of leadership and employees benefit from a clear, concise and comprehensive safety manual.

  • Management uses the safety program as an essential training tool, allowing them to communicate the intent and execution of health and safety policies and procedures to the company.
  • Supervisors use the safety program to ensure the workers they are supervising are performing work as per the policies and procedures.
  • Workers use the safety program to know how to execute work safely at the field level.
